Are You Drinking Enough?
You’ve heard it before… “Drink more water!” You’ve probably heard it from your doctor or another health practitioner. Or from friends and family. Or from countless articles in magazines, newspapers and online. Yet, I’m guessing you’re probably not drinking enough… So why is that?
First, let’s talk about why this is so important. Water is essential to the myriad processes your body performs on a daily basis. That includes everything from temperature regulation, to digestion, removal of waste and toxins, lubrication of your joints, and muscle function.
How much water your body needs depends on a lot of factors including how much you exercise, your climate, and what other food and drink you consume. That said, a good rule of thumb and a great place to start is to divide your body weight in pounds by two. That will give you the number of ounces of water to drink daily. For example, someone weighing 120lbs would need 60 oz of water day.
By the way, that’s water… not soda or coffee (both of which actually dehydrate you).
Now you’re probably wondering how you’re going to drink that much water… Don’t worry, I have a couple great tips for you.
Create your own spa water. Place different fruits, vegetables and herbs in your water and drink from that throughout the day. My favorite combination is cucumber slices with fresh mint leaves. Some other great options to try: frozen or fresh berries, lemon/lime slices, and ginger.
Set a timer. Set a timer for every 10 min and take a couple sips whenever the timer goes off. It’s best to do this with warm water, so try filling a thermos with warm water at the start of your day.
